70s-Style Robot Anime Geppy-X: Synopsis

70s-Style Robot Anime Geppy-X is a side-scrolling shoot ‘em up that serves as a massive, interactive love letter to classic 1970s super robot anime (such as Mazinger Z and Getter Robo). Originally released in 1999 for the PlayStation 1 in Japan, the game is structured exactly like a retro television broadcast, complete with anime opening themes, mid-episode commercial breaks, and previews for the next “episode.”

The Story

The plot is set in a fictionalized version of Earth during the late 1970s. The peace of humanity is shattered when the sinister Space Devil Empire launches a sudden, massive invasion of Earth using giant mecha-monsters.

To combat this cosmic threat, the brilliant Dr. Jin develops Earth’s ultimate defense: Geppy-X, a revolutionary transforming robot powered by the experimental “G-Energy.”

The Characters & Gameplay Mechanics

Players control three passionate young pilots—Kei, Jin, and Akira—who must work together to pilot Geppy-X. The core mechanic revolves around the robot’s ability to seamlessly change forms in mid-battle, adapting to different combat scenarios:

  • Geppy-1 (Piloted by Kei): A balanced, agile fighter built for mid-range dogfights.
  • Geppy-2 (Piloted by Jin): A heavily armored, high-defense form specialized in close-quarters melee combat.
  • Geppy-3 (Piloted by Akira): A long-range tactical sniper form designed to clear waves of enemies from a distance.

As you blast through multiple “episodes,” you must switch forms on the fly, manage your energy levels, and execute over-the-top special attacks to defeat giant boss monsters and save the planet.
